Equal Shmequal

By the end of Grade 2/3, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of equality between pairs of expressions using addition and subtraction of one (and two-digit) numbers.  

After reading "Equal Shmequal", we were reminded that 'equal means the same'.  We used the number balances to create balanced equations that had to have at least 2 numbers on each side of the equal sign.  

As a challenge, we extended our thinking to include bigger numbers and were allowed to use addition, subtraction and multiplication facts along with a calculator to create "Equal Shmequal Balanced Equations".  This work was really impressive and allowed students to really demonstrate their growing knowledge of number sense!  

*Imagine our surprise when this very concept was announced as the "Friday Trivia" question.  We were prepared and handed in all our amazing work!
