Representing Numbers

Our review of numbers continues!  We have learned that there are many ways to show our understanding of a number.  After we played games with numbers to compare and order them, we learned how to use base ten blocks to show a number.  Understanding the number of hundreds, tens and ones that make up a number is key understanding.  We also learned how to tell if a number is even or odd.  Ask your child to explain the games/activities shown in the pictures below!

By the end of Grade 2/3, students will:

         –  represent, compare, and order whole numbers to 1000 (Grade 3) or to 100 (Grade 2) using a variety of tools (e.g., base ten materials or drawings of them)
–  read and print in words whole numbers to one hundred (Grade 3) or to 20 (Grade 2)
  • –  identify and represent the value of a digit in a number according to its position in the number (e.g., use base ten materials to show that the 3 in 324 represents 3 hundreds)
  • –  compose and decompose three-digit numbers (Grade 3) into hundreds, tens, and ones in a variety of ways, using concrete materials (e.g., use base ten materials to decompose 327 into 3 hundreds, 2 tens, and 7 ones, or into 2 hundreds, 12 tens, and 7 ones) or compose and decompose two-digit numbers (Grade 2) into tens and ones
