Great Lakes Workshop

We learned so much from Deanna today.  She works for the Toronto Zoo and teaches people about the Great Lakes and the locally endangered species that live in these lakes.  Here are some highlights of what we learned:
*We learned the names of the 5 Great Lakes.  (Ask your child - use HOMES as a way to remember)
*We learned the important things that a habitat must provide for an animal - food, water, oxygen
*Redside Dace is a tiny fish that likes clean, clear, cool water.  When they leave, we know there is something wrong with the water in our lakes. We need to stop polution to save these little fish.
*American Eels live in one of our Great Lakes in Spring and Summer.  They migrate up the St. Lawrence River in fall and lay their eggs in warmer water.  Their babies return in the winter.  Our man-made damns are making it hard for them to migrate so they are endangered here.  We need to use less energy so we don't need more dams in order to save them.
*Eastern Sand Darters can't camouflage well when there is garbage in the water so they end up getting eaten by their predators.
*Freshwater Muscles like the Muckette help filter/clean lake water but they are endangered by invasive species like the Zebra muscle
*We saw the skull of a Bobcat...an animal which is also endangered in Canada and an elephant tooth which is an animal that is endangered in other parts of the world.
*Human need to look after the habitats of animals so these animals will continue to survive.
